I love Merlin being honestly deferent to Uther in the one moment Uther’s king mask shatters. It’s a recognition and respect of the human under the crown that very little other characters would allow Uther, for good and nil.

Artist note: “Here is my portrait of Antony Stewart Head as Uther Pendragon from BBC’s Merlin. It started out as a traditional pencil sketch which I scanned and painted in photoshop.”
Rec note: There is so little shots of only Merlin and Uther, you can imagine the greatness of having them both in a fanart, and such a realistic one too. This piece’s composition feels in character. It’s in the mix of Uther, ever so focused on things we can’t see, with Merlin behind him looking straight at us. I also like how the pentagram reminds me of a brand/scar all over Merlin’s face, because everything he does in relation to Uther is tainted with him being magic. My shipper heart’s is very happy with everything it sees here.
Everything about this little moment is priceless.

I’d love for more “Merlin living in Uther’s earlier years” fanworks, or time-travelling Uther as a prince or young king to the canon’s present time. Be it crack to the darkest angst ever, wouldn’t each version be fascinating?
(It’d sadly take away a bit of their wonderful age-difference, unless Merlin’s in his later years and Uther’s in his younger’s, in which case the fanwork would win all the bonus points ever.)

Ruffled by leashy_bebes (Mature, 3,700 words, modern era) creator notes: Modern AU, cross-dressing, age difference. At KMM, I tagged this as dub-con because Merlin has had a few drinks and Uther is bossy.
Summary: Uther has a panty fetish. Merlin just happens to wear female underwear.
FY!MU note: There some people who think that all mature Merlin/Uther must be non-consensual canon sex-slave type of fanworks. While there are some of those (\o/ <3 ), there’s also modern AU of adults exploring a mutual kink things like this one that are on my “introduction to Merlin/Uther” list. This is the kind of work I’d reccomend someone trying out this ship for the first time, or anyone unsure about the kinky aspect of that ship. It’s not light and vanilla, but it lingers on the fact that the female underwear kink central to the whole piece is a kink very much shared between both partners - it’s an established kink for each of them, not an embarrassing secret, just something personal. And then they meet someone else who has that kink, and this is Merlin’s POV, where it’s strange and thrilling and hitting on some other of his fantasies, and this is Merlin, who’s startled but bold and daring, and a bit babbling, and he can take whatever you throw at him to make it a beautiful show. And he’s with Uther, who’s more experience and doesn’t know how to say please but sure knows how to dirty talk and savour the cream once he’s got it.
All that to say that this has parties, Merlin wearing lacy knickers, Uther being bossy, being bent over tables, coming over clothes, and such gorgeous descriptions the mental images were sharp and really hot. If you aren’t sure about being into Merlin/Uther, give this fanwork a try and see.
